Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium, Olympic stadium in Montjuïc, Spain
Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium is an Olympic arena in the Montjuïc district of Barcelona that holds nearly 56,000 spectators on a hillside above the harbor. The eclectic facade combines classical colonnades with modern stands, while the open northern side frames views across the city.
The venue was originally built for the 1929 International Exposition as a center for sporting competitions. In the years before 1992, the structure was completely rebuilt, preserving only the historic entrance facade.
The name honors a Catalan president from the early 20th century whose life ended during the civil war. Visitors today see the Olympic cauldron that has stood on a raised platform at the eastern edge since the 1992 Games.
Visitors reach the grounds by funicular railway from Paral·lel metro station or by shuttle buses from Plaça Espanya. The best views from the upper tiers appear on clear days when the Mediterranean becomes visible in the background.
A well-known football club uses the arena temporarily as its home ground while its historic stadium undergoes rebuilding. The transition period runs from 2023 to 2026 and brings regular league matches to the hill above Barcelona.

Barcelona has several sports facilities inherited from the 1992 Olympic Games, including Montjuïc Olympic Stadium and the municipal swimming pool in the same district, which offers sweeping views of the city from its elevated location. The Olympic and Sports Museum showcases this period with collections of medals, torches, and vintage equipment. The Horta Velodrome, built in 1984, features a 250-meter track and still hosts cycling competitions. Beyond this Olympic legacy, the city hosts active sports venues like the Municipal Sailing Center in Barceloneta, which offers classes and equipment rentals, and the Club Natació Atlètic-Barceloneta, with its Olympic-sized pool and water polo team that has competed in the top division since 1992. The Real Club de Polo de Barcelona, founded in 1897, maintains polo fields, tennis courts, and hockey facilities certified internationally. Football enthusiasts can visit the RCD Espanyol stadium, the city's other professional club.
