Schweizer Haus
The Schweizer Haus is a café and tourism office located in Tating, a small village in Schleswig-Holstein, housed in a building from the early 1870s. The structure features distinctive wooden framing with decorative cross-pattern beams and a wide overhang, along with indoor seating on the ground floor and attic for about fifty guests, and outdoor garden space for roughly seventy more.
The building was constructed before 1873 as a summer house for the Hochdorf family and remains the only surviving structure of its kind in Schleswig-Holstein. A careful restoration between 1990 and 1996 preserved its original character, followed by the opening of a gallery café in 1998.
The Schweizer Haus shows how the local community adapted Swiss architectural style to suit their own traditions and landscape. The building and its garden represent how people valued craftsmanship and careful land management in past generations.
The building provides seating for approximately fifty guests indoors across two levels and around seventy more in the large outdoor garden. The location makes it a convenient stop for anyone walking the coastal routes or exploring the surrounding countryside.
The building is the last remaining example of its architectural style in the entire region, making it a rare testament to 1870s construction methods. The combination of gallery displays with café services since 1998 gives this historic house an active role in village life today.
