Victoria Park, Municipal park in Canton district, Cardiff, Wales
Victoria Park is a public green space in the Canton area of Cardiff, Wales, with mature trees, flower beds, tennis courts, and a synthetic turf pitch for five-a-side football. A splash pad for children and paved paths connecting the different areas complete the layout.
Cardiff City Council laid out this ground between 1897 and 1898 to mark Queen Victoria's 60th year on the throne. Its creation met the growing need for open green spaces in a city that was expanding rapidly at the time.
The park sits at the heart of the Canton neighborhood, where people gather for outdoor events and markets during warmer months. These regular occasions give the space a role that goes beyond a simple green area.
The park opens every day at 7:30 AM and closes 30 minutes before sunset, so available time varies by season. Arriving earlier in the day is a good idea during summer, when the grassy areas and courts tend to fill up.
A seal named Billy lived in the park from 1912 to 1939 and became a well-known figure in the neighborhood. A bronze statue still marks the spot where he used to be, right where the children's splash pad now stands.
