HokBen ITC Cempaka Mas, Japanese restaurant in Kemayoran, Indonesia
HokBen ITC Cempaka Mas is a Japanese fast food restaurant on the Lower Ground floor of the ITC Cempaka Mas shopping center in Kemayoran, Jakarta. The menu covers bento boxes, tempura, grilled chicken, and soups, available as single items or as full meal sets.
HokBen was founded in Indonesia in 1985 under the name Hoka Hoka Bento and was one of the first Japanese fast food chains in the country. Over time, the brand name was shortened to HokBen and the chain expanded to dozens of locations across Jakarta and other Indonesian cities.
HokBen is a well-known fast food chain in Indonesia that has adapted Japanese dishes to local tastes, for example with spicier sauces and rice sides. During Ramadan, special menus appear that are suited to local eating habits.
The restaurant is on the Lower Ground floor of the shopping center and easy to reach from the main hall. Food can be eaten on site, taken away, or ordered through several delivery apps.
Although HokBen serves Japanese food, it is a fully Indonesian company with no Japanese ownership. This makes it a rare example of an Asian fast food chain built around another country's cuisine.
