Budi Utomo

Budi Utomo was an educational organization in Jakarta dedicated to advancing learning and teaching. It operated through roughly 40 branches across the country, engaging students and civil servants in its educational programs.

Founded in 1908 by Dr. Soetomo and medical students, it marked the start of the Indonesian national movement against Dutch colonial rule. These early years laid the foundation for later resistance and cultural self-determination.

The organization blended Western teaching methods with Javanese customs to create learning programs that honored local values. This mixing of approaches shaped how education was understood in the region.
