Jakarta Art Building, Performing arts center in Central Jakarta, Indonesia

The Jakarta Art Building is a neo-Renaissance concert hall on Jalan Gedung Kesenian in Sawah Besar, Central Jakarta. Its main concert room measures 24 by 17.5 metres and holds about 475 people, with a balcony and a stage of 10.75 by 14 by 17 metres. Two open halls flank the building, and a loge to either side of the spectators can take five extra seats.

Built in 1821 under Dutch colonial rule as Theater Schouwburg Weltevreden, the structure initially served European performances. After decades functioning as a cinema under different names, it eventually returned to its original purpose as an arts center.

The building's name Gedung Komedi, "Comedy Building", survives from its early popular use. In the independence era it hosted the Seniman Merdeka ("Independent Artists") group, among them Rosihan Anwar, Usmar Ismail, El Hakim and HB Jassin. Its programmes today are organised around cooperation with foreign cultural centres, traditional arts groups, performing-arts festivals and audio-visual documentation.

Visiting works best during regular performances and concerts held throughout the year. It helps to plan ahead since events have limited time slots and seating is restricted to the auditorium's capacity.

The cinema chapter began in 1968, when the building became the Diana cinema; it was renamed City Theater in 1969. The return to theatre came only in 1984, by decree of Jakarta's governor, and the 1987 renovation brought the name Gedung Kesenian Jakarta.
