A.A. Maramis Building, Colonial office building in Jakarta, Indonesia.
The A.A. Maramis Building is a two-story administrative structure with white walls, symmetrical layout, and a central staircase connecting two side wings. It now operates as the headquarters of the Ministry of Finance.
Construction began in 1809 under Dutch Governor-General Herman Willem Daendels and was completed in 1828 under J. Tromp's supervision. It was initially planned as the Governor-General's residence before becoming a government office.
The building displays colonial architecture adapted for tropical conditions, with tall ceilings and wide windows that allow air to flow through hot, humid weather. These features shape how the space looks and functions today.
The building is located on Jalan Lapangan Banteng Timur Number 2 and is an active workplace, so public areas may be limited. Visitors should check access rules in advance and plan to appreciate the structure primarily from outside.
It ranks among the oldest surviving structures in Central Jakarta and dates from the early phase of Dutch colonial development. Its transformation from a planned residence to an administrative center reflects shifting priorities of colonial administration.
