Ikada Stadium, Multi-purpose stadium in Jakarta, Indonesia
Ikada Stadium was a multi-purpose sports venue in Jakarta with seating for approximately 30,000 spectators and an athletic track surrounding the central playing field. The facility could accommodate various sporting events and was conveniently accessible by public transportation.
The grounds began in 1818 as Champ de Mars during colonial rule and underwent several name changes before becoming Ikada Stadium during Japanese occupation. In 1963 the site was transformed into Merdeka Square to make room for the Indonesian National Monument.
The venue hosted major sporting events that drew people from across the region to watch football matches and local competitions. These gatherings shaped how Jakarta's residents connected through sports and built a sense of community pride.
The site was centrally located in Jakarta and accessible through multiple transit routes. Visitors should know that this historical location now exists only as part of the adjacent Merdeka complex.
The stadium received its Ikada name during Japanese occupation in World War II, marking a significant shift in the site's identity. Its later transformation into a square for a national monument shows how the location evolved from a sports venue into a symbol of independence.
