SLS South Beach
SLS South Beach is a twelve-story hotel building on Collins Avenue in Miami Beach, designed in the Art Deco style. The property includes 142 guest rooms, an outdoor pool, a fitness center, and an on-site Japanese restaurant called Katsuya featuring a sushi bar.
The building was constructed by architect L. Murray Dixon in the late 1930s and early 1940s, completed in 1940 with revolutionary air conditioning for that era. It underwent major renovations in the 1990s and again in 2012 to maintain operations and update guest facilities.
The hotel's name reflects its modern design philosophy that shapes the property today. Inside, playful colors and styles blend French influences from the 18th century with contemporary design, creating a lively setting that appeals to younger travelers seeking an active environment.
The hotel sits directly beside the beach with immediate water access and is less than a mile from Lincoln Road shopping area. Amenities include private parking, valet service, and round-the-clock front desk staff speaking multiple languages.
During World War Two, the military requisitioned the building, and some original Art Deco ornaments were lost during this period. After the war ended, decorative details were restored to recover the structure's classic style.
