Khyber Pass
Khyber Pass is an Afghan restaurant in Montreal featuring wood and brick decor in shades of burgundy, seating about 60 people comfortably. A large outdoor terrace complements the cozy interior and allows guests to dine outside on pleasant days.
The restaurant was opened in 1995 by Faruk Ramisch from Afghanistan and relocated to its current Avenue Duluth East location in 1998. The founder created a gathering place where Montreal's Afghan community could share and preserve their traditions.
The restaurant is named after a famous mountain passage between Afghanistan and Pakistan, connecting visitors to the history and significance of that region. Decorative objects from Afghanistan, brought back by the founder from his travels, fill the space and create a feeling of stepping into the country itself.
Guests are welcome to bring their own wine, and staff will help select and pair bottles with dishes. During busy times, wait times may be longer, but the friendly staff readily offers guidance about dishes and ingredients.
A standout dish is pistachio and rose pudding, where the delicate rose aroma leaves a lasting impression. The restaurant can also be reserved for groups of about 40 people for special occasions while maintaining its home-like feeling.
