Claremont Resort & Club
The Claremont Resort & Club is a large hotel set on 22 acres in the hills between Berkeley and Oakland, featuring 276 rooms with modern amenities. It offers multiple restaurants, heated saltwater pools, spa facilities, eight tennis courts and four pickleball courts, plus fitness centers for both hotel guests and club members.
The hotel opened in 1915, just before the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco, and was built to accommodate visitors to the fair. Over decades, ownership changed multiple times, with the Gillum family renovating and painting it white in 1937, and it is now managed by HEI Hotels + Resorts.
The resort's name comes from a London neighborhood and reflects a tradition of European elegance. Today, hotel guests and club members gather at the pools, dining venues, and event spaces for both everyday moments and special celebrations.
The hotel sits in the hills with views of the bay and surrounding area, making it a good base for exploring Berkeley and the Bay Area. The elevated location makes it easy for guests to venture out to hiking trails and nearby attractions, while staff can help plan excursions and arrange transportation.
The resort has a collection of ghost stories tied to its long history, and hosts Haunted History Tours every October where visitors explore spooky locations and learn about old legends. One famous story says students from UC Berkeley once measured the distance to the hotel and found it was just outside the alcohol ban zone, allegedly earning them free drinks for life.
