St. John's Presbyterian Church, American Craftsman church in San Francisco, California, United States.
St. John's Presbyterian Church is an American Craftsman-style church at the corner of Lake Street and Arguello Boulevard in the Richmond District of San Francisco, California. The building features a steep wooden roof, exposed structural beams, large windows, and natural materials throughout its exterior and interior.
The church was designed by architect Julia Morgan and built in 1905, originally standing on Post Street near Mason in a different part of the city. After the 1906 earthquake, the congregation moved to its current site on Arguello Boulevard, where the present building was constructed.
The American Craftsman style of the building is visible in every detail, from the exposed wooden beams to the natural stone and timber used throughout. Visitors attending services today experience a space that feels more like a crafted home than a formal place of worship.
The church sits near the edge of Golden Gate Park and is easy to reach on foot from several nearby neighborhoods. It is worth checking opening times in advance, as access to the interior depends on service and community hours.
The first service in the original Post Street building took place just three days before the 1906 earthquake that largely destroyed that part of the city. The congregation then held gatherings in private homes until the new site on Arguello Boulevard was ready.
