First Unitarian Church, Dance studio in Berkeley, United States
First Unitarian Church is a two-story wood-shingled structure originally designed as a church and now located at Bancroft Way on the UC Berkeley campus. The building maintains its original architectural features while currently serving as a dance studio and educational facility for the university.
Designed by architect A.C. Schweinfurth in 1898, the building originally served as a church and reflects late 19th century religious architecture. The University of California acquired it in 1960 for dance education and gained recognition on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981.
The name reflects the Unitarian congregation that originally gathered here and shaped the space with their beliefs. Today, visitors can still sense the understated, dignified character of the wooden structure that speaks to this religious heritage.
The building features an accessible entrance with a ramp on the east side and ground floor restrooms available to visitors. A drinking fountain is located near the restroom area, making a visit comfortable.
The building represents a period when shingle-style architecture was popular in California and displays characteristic details of this craft-focused building tradition. Its transformation from a place of spiritual gathering to a space for artistic learning has given it new meaning while preserving its visual roots.
