Barrington Hall, Student residential building in Berkeley, United States.
Barrington Hall is a large student residential building in Berkeley located at 2315 Dwight Way with two separate street entrances. It ranks among the city's largest dormitory-style facilities and has housed many residents at once.
Originally built as Lafayette Apartments in 1907, the building was purchased by the University Students' Cooperative Association in 1935 and renamed Barrington Hall. This change marked a shift in how the property was managed and used.
Residents painted the walls with murals and graffiti from the 1960s through the 1980s, capturing scenes and messages from student life. These artworks reflected how young people used their living space to express themselves.
The building underwent major renovations in the 1940s to modernize its facilities and convert spaces into residential apartments. Keep in mind that this is an active residential building currently occupied by students.
During the 1980s, the building hosted concerts by Bay Area punk bands, with performances from Black Flag and Dead Kennedys among others. It became an informal venue for the local music scene.
