The Freight and Salvage, Folk music venue in Downtown Berkeley, United States.
The Freight and Salvage is a nonprofit music venue on Addison Street in downtown Berkeley, California, with seating for close to 490 people. The hall is built mainly from wood, which gives it a warm sound suited to acoustic performances.
The venue opened in 1968 inside a former furniture store in Berkeley and moved to different downtown locations over the following decades. Its current home on Addison Street opened in 2009 and was built specifically for the needs of the organization.
The Freight and Salvage has long been a gathering place for folk, blues, and world music fans in the Bay Area, drawing audiences who come to listen rather than just to socialize. The room stays respectfully quiet during performances, which makes it easy to focus on the music and the artists on stage.
The venue is about a block from the Downtown Berkeley BART station, so getting there by train is straightforward. Buying tickets in advance is a good idea for popular shows, as the hall fills up quickly.
The current building was constructed using reclaimed materials from the previous structure and features a green roof. It is one of the few music venues in the Bay Area built to meet environmental standards from the ground up.
