Tangalooma Island Resort
Tangalooma Island Resort is a beachfront hotel on Moreton Island, a sandy island off the coast of Brisbane accessible only by ferry. The property sits directly on the beach and offers several room types, ranging from standard rooms to villas and apartments facing the ocean.
Moreton Island was home to the Quandamooka people for thousands of years before European settlers arrived in the 19th century and used the island for whaling and fishing. The resort was later built on the site of a former whaling station that closed in the mid-20th century.
The name Mulgumpin comes from the Quandamooka people, who have lived on this land for thousands of years. Guided tours offered at the resort help visitors understand this connection through the landscape, the local wildlife, and the stories tied to the island.
The ferry to Moreton Island departs from Brisbane port and the crossing takes around 75 minutes. Once on the island, comfortable shoes are useful since many areas are reached on foot through sand, and the resort welcomes both day visitors and overnight guests.
Each evening, wild dolphins come to the shore at the resort, and guests can feed them by hand under staff supervision. These dolphins have been returning to the same stretch of beach for decades, making this one of the few places in the world where such a regular encounter happens.
