Hotel Gniew Castle
Hotel Gniew Castle is a hotel housed inside a medieval fortress in the Polish town of Gniew, on the Vistula River. The building is made up of thick stone walls, towers, and vaulted spaces that have been fitted out to receive overnight guests.
The fortress was built by the Teutonic Order in the 13th and 14th centuries and served for a long time as a defensive seat for local rulers. After changing hands many times over the centuries, the building was eventually converted into a hotel.
The name of the hotel points directly to the medieval fortress it occupies, making the history of the place immediately present for guests. Stone walls and original architectural details visible throughout the building give staying here a different feeling from a standard hotel stay.
The hotel stands in the center of Gniew, close to the main square, so the old town is easy to reach on foot from the front door. Arriving in the morning gives guests more time to explore the building and the surrounding streets before larger groups come through.
Inside the building there is a museum displaying objects found on site, offering a window into the lives of the different people who occupied the fortress over the centuries. Guests can also join lantern-lit evening tours through the grounds, which show the building in a very different way from a daytime visit.
