Schlosshotel Steinburg, Castle restaurant on Würzburger Stein hillside, Germany
Schlosshotel Steinburg is a three-story Gothic-style building from 1897 situated on the Würzburger Stein hillside, offering views across the Main River and city center below. The restaurant features several dining rooms for events, including a modern conference space called Refugium added in 2012 with climate-controlled areas.
A fortress from the Hohenlohe family, known as Castrum in Lapide, stood on this location until 1356 when it was destroyed. Wine merchant J.W. Meuschel purchased the land around 1900 and constructed the building that exists today.
The kitchen blends regional Franconian dishes with international cuisine using ingredients from local producers and wines from nearby vineyards. Visitors experience how the region maintains its food traditions in an upscale setting.
The restaurant sits on a hillside with commanding views, but visitors should prepare for stairs and some steep approaches. Seating on the terrace is comfortable, though availability and conditions change with the seasons.
The chestnut terrace becomes especially inviting on mild evenings when the trees form a natural canopy overhead and city lights reflect off the river below. This location offers a rare sense of being close to nature while perched directly above the town.
