Barrio
Barrio is a restaurant housed in a 19th-century mansion in central Bucharest, designed by architect Alexandru Savulescu and featuring elegant architectural details like arches and carved ornaments. The space includes large rooms with high ceilings, a courtyard with mature trees, and has operated a boutique hotel with eight rooms since 2006.
Built in the 19th century as a residence for a Romanian noble family, the building later served as a notary office during the communist period. After a period of decline, it underwent careful restoration and reopened in 2006 as a restaurant with hotel operations.
The name references a Spanish neighborhood concept, reflecting the welcoming, mixed-community feel the restaurant aims to create. The decor blends classical European elegance with modern comfort, making it a gathering place where locals and travelers feel equally at home.
The restaurant sits centrally in Sector 1 near Piața Romană and is easily accessible on foot or by car. The area around it is lively but the space itself provides a quiet retreat, and it stays open late into the evening making it suitable for dinner outings.
The building once served as a busy notary office during the communist era where residents registered businesses and handled official matters. This unexpected past adds a layer of history that the space still quietly carries in its architecture and layout.
