Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, Maritime history museum in Saint Michaels, US
The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum sits on 18 acres of waterfront with 35 buildings containing exhibits about regional maritime heritage. The collection includes hundreds of historical vessels and thousands of artifacts from local seafaring history.
The museum was founded in 1965 and converted former seafood processing buildings and docks at Navy Point into an educational center. Its creation saved important structures from demolition and turned them into a place for learning about the bay.
The museum shows how boat building was practiced as a craft and preserves the way people here have lived with the water for generations.
The site is walkable with mostly flat paths between buildings and the waterfront. Comfortable shoes are helpful since you will be on foot exploring several buildings and may climb aboard some vessels.
An 1879 lighthouse was acquired in 1965 for a modest sum and then moved by barge across the water to its current spot. The building now sits at the water's edge and serves as one of the museum's main focal points.
