Cliffe Castle

Cliffe Castle is an art museum in Bradford that displays Victorian paintings, period furniture, natural history specimens, archaeological finds, and decorative glasswork across its exhibition rooms. The spaces are filled with objects that reflect the collecting passion of the original owner.

Henry Isaac Butterfield, a textile manufacturer, built this mansion in the 1880s as a showcase for international artworks and French decorative styles. The construction took place during a period of great prosperity in the region's textile industry.

The building showcases Morris and Co stained glass pieces that reflect the artistic tastes of its time, while rotating displays highlight stories and objects connected to the local region.

The museum sits near Spring Gardens Lane in Bradford and opens Tuesday through Sunday. Weekend opening times start later than on weekdays, so plan your visit accordingly.

The Grand Staircase features the restored Butterfield Window with ornate details, while the surrounding park holds numerous Victorian garden features and a working aviary. Many visitors discover the living animals before noticing the architectural treasures of the building itself.
