Fernerhaus, Mountain restaurant in Tux, Austria
Fernerhaus is a mountain restaurant in the Hintertux Glacier area of Tux, Tyrol, sitting at an altitude of 2,660 meters (8,727 feet). It has both an indoor dining area and an outdoor terrace, together offering around 1,900 seats.
The Fernerhaus opened in 1969 with just 200 seats, starting as a small hut on the glacier. All building materials had to be carried up by single-chair lift, since the site had no road access at the time.
The Fernerhaus reflects the Tyrolean mountain hut style, with a self-service counter and wooden benches common in Alpine dining. Many skiers use it as a meeting point to warm up and share a plate of local food like Tiroler Gröstl or dumplings.
The restaurant sits right next to the ski slopes and is easy to reach from the nearby lift stations. Outside the main ski season, it is worth checking operating conditions in advance, as access depends on the glacier lifts being open.
The Fernerhaus sits at a junction between two ski route systems that use different numbering schemes, which catches many visitors off guard when reading the trail maps. Skiers moving between the two networks pass through here regardless of where they are heading.
