Tuxer Fernerhaus, Mountain restaurant in Tux, Austria
Tuxer Fernerhaus is a mountain restaurant on the Hintertux Glacier at 2660 meters elevation and serves as the hub of the glacier ski area. The building holds roughly 950 guests indoors and 950 outdoors, reached by cable cars from below.
The building opened in 1969 starting with only 200 guest seats, and a chairlift was built on-site beforehand to carry construction materials upward. This early phase shows how challenging it was to build a restaurant at that elevation.
The restaurant offers different ways to dine, from quick self-service to seated meals in traditional style. Visitors gather here to rest and enjoy the mountain setting, making it a social hub high above the valleys.
The restaurant is reached by two cable cars and has plenty of seating both indoors and outdoors. Visitors should prepare for high-altitude weather and bring appropriate gear, especially if planning to stay longer.
The restaurant draws skiers year-round, not just in winter but also in summer on the permanent glacier. Another feature is that skiers can descend directly to multiple runs from the terrace, making it an unusual starting and ending point.
