Schlegeisspeicher, reservoir in Tyrol
Schlegeisspeicher is an artificial lake in the Zillertal region above 1500 meters elevation, surrounded by steep mountain slopes and green alpine meadows. The water is cooled by glacier flows and has a deep blue color, held back by a massive concrete dam built in the 1970s.
The lake was built in the 1970s as a hydropower facility to generate electricity for surrounding villages. The dam, standing over 130 meters tall, was a major infrastructure project that shaped the regional landscape and continues to define it today.
The name derives from local Tyrolean language. Visitors use the place mainly for hiking and taking photographs, with the quiet and clear mountain air shaping the experience.
Access is via the toll Schlegeis Alpine Road, open from June to October and stretching about 15 kilometers from Mayrhofen. Parking is available but often full during the day, so arriving early or using local buses from the Zillertal is recommended.
A notable suspension bridge spans a deep gorge, connecting hiking trails and offering a striking view down into the depths. This bridge is a popular photo spot and an unforgettable experience for visitors brave enough to cross it.
