Prithvi Cafe
Prithvi Cafe is an open-air café on the grounds of Prithvi Theatre in the Juhu area of Mumbai. It has simple wooden tables set under trees, and the menu focuses on tea, coffee, and light Indian snacks.
The café grew alongside Prithvi Theatre, which the Kapoor family founded in 1978 to honour the memory of actor and playwright Prithviraj Kapoor. Over time, the café became a gathering spot in its own right, separate from the theatre's programming.
The cafe draws writers, actors, and students who come to talk, read, or simply sit after a show. Posters from past productions cover the walls, giving the space the feel of a living archive of the theatre next door.
The streets around the theatre are narrow and parking is hard to find, so arriving on foot or by rickshaw makes the visit easier. The space fills up before and after shows, so coming at off-peak times gives a calmer experience.
A small board near the entrance lists the day's theatre performances, so visitors drinking chai can see what is happening on stage a few steps away. This direct link between a cup of tea and a live production is something few cafés in the world can offer.
