Kawatoyo, Traditional eel restaurant in Narita, Japan
Kawatoyo is an eel specialist restaurant in Narita that prepares fresh eels through multiple steps of filleting, skewering, grilling, and steaming before serving them on rice in lacquered boxes. The establishment occupies a three-story building located between Narita station and Shinshoji temple.
The restaurant was founded in 1910 and expanded to its current size in 1926. In 2020 it received recognition as a nationally registered tangible cultural property.
The place demonstrates traditional eel preparation skills passed down through generations, with chefs cooking in front of diners and showcasing methods that define the local food culture.
The restaurant accepts only cash payments and operates on a first-come basis without reservations. Visiting is easiest to fit into your schedule if you plan a stop there while traveling between the station and the temple area.
The sauce used for cooking eels contains flavors accumulated over decades, as it has been continuously replenished since the restaurant opened. This aged seasoning base gives each dish a depth that cannot be replicated elsewhere.
