The Ruined Garden
The Ruined Garden is a restaurant and café in Fez located within the partially preserved remains of an old merchant's house. The courtyard stays open to the sky and is filled with flowers, trees, and plants, while tables and chairs are arranged between the weathered stones and greenery.
The building was once a merchant's house and became partially ruined over time. In 2006, the owners purchased the property and deliberately chose to preserve the ruins rather than fully rebuild, keeping them as a contrast to the restored areas.
The name reflects the preserved ruins of an old merchant's house that was deliberately left partially unbuilt. Visitors experience a mix of weathered stones and lush plants, which mirrors how gardens in Fez have traditionally served as gathering spaces for rest and conversation.
The spot is easily accessible on foot and located near Fez's historic neighborhoods. Staff can assist visitors with directions and serve food and drinks in a relaxed setting.
A black stray cat named Madrigal regularly visits the garden and brings a playful character to the place. Visitors can spoil the friendly cat with a sardine and watch it rest on the benches.
