JAKI, German restaurant and nightclub in Stadtgarten, Cologne, Germany
JAKI is a restaurant and nightclub located next to the Stadtgarten park in Cologne. The ground floor holds a dining area, the basement contains a club space with a dance floor and DJ booth, and an outdoor area with a beer garden rounds out the space.
The venue opened as a tribute to Jaki Liebezeit, drummer of the Cologne experimental band Can. Before the current club moved in, the basement was home to Studio 672, a space that had been a hub for local musicians and artists.
The name honors Jaki Liebezeit, the drummer of Cologne band Can, who helped shape a style of experimental music in the 1970s. Live events and concerts at the venue keep that connection to local music culture present for visitors today.
The space is divided into clearly separate areas, so it is easy to move between dining and the club depending on the mood of the evening. Checking the schedule in advance is a good idea, since the program changes from night to night.
The DJ booth in the basement was built with ergonomics in mind, something that rarely gets this level of attention in club design. It was part of a full renovation of the basement, which was redesigned from scratch rather than simply reused.
