Escaliers Sainte-Anne, Stone stairway in historic center, Avignon, France.

The Escaliers Sainte-Anne are stone stairs in central Avignon that link the Jardin des Doms to neighborhoods on the eastern side of town. Multiple sections and landings create a continuous pathway through the historic district.

Architect Peru designed and completed a full reconstruction of the stairs in 1767. Archaeological work during construction uncovered Roman bronze objects that testified to ancient settlement in this area.

L'Atelier at the foot of these stairs hosts regular dance performances and serves as a workspace for dancers and choreographers. The venue has become a gathering place where the local performance community meets throughout the year.

The stairs form a main pedestrian link between different elevation levels across town. Wear sturdy shoes, as the stone steps can become slippery when wet.

Excavations on the upper levels revealed bronze artifacts bearing Roman inscriptions, including coins from Emperor Nero's era. These finds suggest the site held importance during ancient times.
