L’Étoile du Roy, Historical frigate replica at Port of Saint-Malo, France
L'Étoile du Roy is a replica of a historical sailing vessel moored at the Port of Saint-Malo that visitors can board and explore. The three-masted ship carries numerous sails and allows guests to walk through different areas of the deck and cabins.
The vessel was constructed in Turkey in 1996 and later appeared in the television series Hornblower. It was then acquired by a cruise company and has since become a visitor attraction moored in Saint-Malo.
The vessel demonstrates traditional sailing techniques that visitors can observe firsthand when it visits maritime events at ports across Europe. The way crew members handle the sails and navigate shows how sailors once worked and lived aboard such ships.
Visiting on quieter days allows more comfortable exploration of the ship's spaces and better observation of the sails and rigging. Wear sturdy shoes since wooden decks can be slippery when wet from rain or sea spray.
The ship features working replica cannons that fire real black powder during special demonstrations on deck. These firing displays give visitors a glimpse of what naval combat sounded and felt like in earlier centuries.
