Musée d’Histoire de la Ville et du Pays Malouin, Maritime history museum in Saint Malo Castle, France
The Musée d'Histoire de la Ville et du Pays Malouin was a history museum located within three levels of the Grand Keep and General Tower of the castle. The galleries displayed objects related to local maritime activities and exploration over several centuries.
The museum was founded in 1862 and traced the maritime history of the city across several centuries. It focused on the trading voyages and the role the local population played in oceanic expansion and commerce.
The museum preserves over 8,000 artifacts connected to local history, including memorabilia from sea captains and religious objects from the castle chapel.
The museum closed permanently in November 2019 and is no longer accessible to visitors. A replacement maritime museum is planned to open elsewhere in the city during 2025.
From the top of the Grand Keep, visitors could see the entire city and port in all directions. This viewpoint offered a complete panoramic view of the location and its surroundings.
