Fort National, Military fort on tidal island near Saint-Malo, France.
Fort National is a granite fortress on a tidal island near Saint-Malo featuring thick defensive walls, artillery platforms, and traditional military buildings following 17th-century fortification standards. The layout follows a clear geometric pattern with bastions at the corners and casemented gun positions.
Built between 1689 and 1693 under Vauban's direction, this fortification held fourteen cannons and three mortars to protect Saint-Malo's harbor against Anglo-Dutch attacks. It remained in active military use and underwent modifications as naval technology changed.
The fort reflects French military engineering through its geometric layout and reinforced stone construction from the age of Louis XIV. Visitors experience this approach directly when entering through the main gate and walking past the barracks and gun platforms.
The fort is reachable from Eventail Beach during low tide, typically between June and September when access is safest. Guided tours are available in French and English, and it is best to wear waterproof shoes and check tide times before your visit.
This fortification went through several name changes over the centuries: Fort Royal, Fort d'Îlette, Fort Républicain, Fort Impérial, and finally Fort National after 1870. Each name shift reflected France's changing political circumstances.
