Brettos bar, Historic distillery and bar in Plaka, Greece.
Brettos bar is a spirits retailer in Plaka that has been distilling liqueurs and ouzo for over a century. The walls are lined with hundreds of colored bottles from floor to ceiling, illuminated against wooden barrels and the original copper still.
Michael Brettos founded this business in 1909, bringing traditional recipes from Smyrna to create ouzo, brandy, and various liqueurs. The craft methods have been passed down through generations and continue to shape production today.
The place serves as a meeting point for people discovering Greek spirits and traditional recipes. Visitors can taste over 50 different Greek liqueurs, including mastiha and limoncello, experiencing flavors that reflect generations of local production methods.
The shop opens daily and functions as both a tasting bar and a retail store. Visitors can sample spirits or purchase bottles at their own pace without formal restrictions.
The illuminated bottle collection inside is so striking that the shop ranks among Athens' most photographed spots after the Acropolis. This visual effect comes from the careful arrangement of hundreds of containers that reflect light differently.
