Aglaureion

The Aglaureion is an ancient Greek sanctuary on the eastern slope of the Acropolis featuring a large cave opening carved into the rock face. The site reveals layers of religious use built directly into the natural hillside.

The site saw use during classical times but declined in importance over later periods. A turning point came in 480 BCE when Persian forces used this location to gain access to the Acropolis.

The sanctuary served as a space where priestesses led religious ceremonies and young men fulfilled sacred duties tied to their coming of age. These practices shaped how Athenians understood their relationship with the divine and their community.

The site is accessible from the main Acropolis entrance and sits on a rocky slope with uneven ground. Stable footing and appropriate footwear help you navigate the area safely.

Archaeological excavations in the 1980s uncovered a stone dedication honoring a priestess from the 3rd century BCE. This finding reveals that women held significant religious authority at this place.
