Maheri Village, Mountain village in Apokoronas, Greece.
Maheri is a mountain village in the Apokoronas region of Crete, nestled in a natural amphitheater shape at 160 meters elevation between two canyons at the base of the White Mountains. The settlement features stone houses with characteristic large arches dating from the Venetian period.
The village developed during Venetian rule and displays this period through its distinctive stone architecture and arched structures. An old olive oil production facility from that era remains part of the settlement's character today.
The main square brings residents together beneath old trees where they spend time and drink coffee each day. This gathering place shapes daily life and shows how the community stays connected.
The village is about 23 kilometers from Chania and reached via a narrow bridge crossing the Agios Nikolaos gorge. Access is possible by foot or car, though the tight infrastructure should be kept in mind.
The settlement holds protected national monument status, which prevents new construction from being permitted. This makes it a special place where old building methods are preserved and only existing structures can be restored.
