Plage de La Baule

Plage de La Baule is a sandy beach stretching about 9 kilometers along the Atlantic coast, featuring golden sand and waters suitable for various water sports. The bay is framed by wooded hills that form a natural amphitheater, protecting the shore from the landward side.

The area transformed into a resort destination in 1849 when a Nantes shipowner began planting pine trees to stabilize the coastal dunes. This planting effort changed the landscape and created the foundation for its development as a seaside destination.

The beachfront promenade displays architectural elements from the 19th century, including ornate villas and grand hotels that reflect French coastal style. These buildings shape the character of the place today and show how wealthy families once built their summer homes here.

Visitors will find equipment rental services and several water sports schools along the coast offering activities like surfing and sailing. During summer months, lifeguards are present in designated swimming areas, and the beach is surrounded by parking and basic facilities.

The beach gained membership in the Most Beautiful Bays in the World Club in 1997 after meeting strict environmental and cultural preservation standards. This recognition highlights that the area has maintained special natural qualities that distinguish it from other coastal destinations.
