Ondarraitz

Ondarraïtz is a sandy beach in Hendaye stretching along the French-Spanish border with a gentle slope into the water. The fine sand extends from the town center and is backed by a seaside promenade with shops and services.

The area began attracting visitors in the 1880s when a casino was built, shifting it from a quiet fishing village to a seaside destination. This period established the foundation for tourism that continues today.

This beach sits in French Basque Country, where you can observe local traditions and taste regional seafood dishes that locals favor. The surrounding area reflects the strong Basque identity through language, customs, and community activities you notice while walking around.

Lifeguards are on duty during summer months, and you will find showers and restrooms along the waterfront. Come early in the day to find a good spot, especially on weekends and warm days.

Two rock formations jutting from the water at the eastern end create a natural landmark visible from most of the beach. These formations have become a favorite spot for photographers and offer a sense of where the beach ends.
