Maison-Phare de Trousse-Chemise

Maison-Phare de Trousse-Chemise is a stone lighthouse residence set within natural sandy grassland on the Ile de Re. The structure comprises a tower and three ground-floor rooms connected by a central vestibule, surrounded by dunes and coastal vegetation.

Built in 1875, this maritime structure was constructed to guide ships safely through the Fier d'Ars passage. The lighthouse lantern played a vital role in maritime navigation for vessels traveling through this challenging waterway.

The building hosts temporary exhibitions focused on climate change, ocean preservation, and coastal protection organized by local associations. These shows help visitors understand the challenges facing the coastal region today.

The residence is open from July through August, Wednesday to Saturday, with no admission fee required. Plan your visit accordingly as access depends on weather conditions and the surrounding sandy terrain can be challenging to navigate.

A protected barn owl inhabits the upper floor, making this area off-limits to visitors. This resident predator demonstrates how the historic structure now serves as a sanctuary for local wildlife.
