Blaarmeersen
Blaarmeersen is a large recreational park in Ghent featuring a central lake, sandy beach, and extensive green spaces. It offers water activities like swimming and kayaking, sports facilities including tennis and volleyball courts, a skate park, mini-golf, children's playgrounds, and climbing structures throughout the grounds.
The site was originally a wetland landscape along the Leie River and had a railway line running through it until around 1950. Starting in the 1960s the city began developing it as a recreation area, building basic infrastructure in the 1970s and gradually adding sports facilities over time.
The name Blaarmeersen refers to the former wetland landscape along the Leie River. Today it serves as a gathering space where city residents come to relax, exercise, and spend time together in the outdoors.
The park is easily accessible by bicycle via family-friendly routes or by public transportation and offers ample parking. It remains open year-round with activities and facilities available across all seasons for visitors of different interests.
The park is home to Biover, one of Europe's largest climbing gyms with over 3,500 square meters of climbing surface. Additionally there is an artificial ski slope with artificial snow that has allowed winter sports on a hillside since 2003.
