Schlitterbahn, Water park in Galveston, Texas
Schlitterbahn is a water park in Galveston, Texas, with three sections connected by branching river channels running more than one mile. Dozens of slides, pools, and water play features spread across the grounds between palm trees and open lawn areas.
The park opened in 1979 as part of a chain that began in New Braunfels and expanded to the Texas Gulf Coast. Owners enlarged the site during the 1980s and 1990s to add new attractions for families from across the state.
The name comes from German words referring to slippery paths and water slides, reflecting Texas heritage of German settlers in the region. Visitors find tropical plants and open swimming areas that combine beach culture with artificial wave pools.
Cabanas and loungers can be rented at the entrance and offer shade during hot summer days. Picnic pavilions sit near the Surfenburg zone and work well for breaks between water activities.
The MASSIV Monster Blaster is the tallest water coaster in the world and accelerates riders uphill through multiple propulsion segments. This ride carries passengers across the grounds in open slides that combine climbs with freefall sections.
