Maus Hábitos, Cultural bar in Porto, Portugal
Maus Hábitos is a bar and cultural space on the fourth floor of a building on Rua de Passos Manuel, in central Porto. It brings together a restaurant, a concert hall, an art gallery, and a rooftop terrace within a single floor.
The space opened in 2001 and helped establish Porto as a destination for contemporary art and nightlife at a time when few venues offered both together. From 2002 onward, the Saco Azul Cultural Association took over the programming and gave it the shape it has today.
The name 'Maus Hábitos' translates as 'Bad Habits', which sets the tone for a place that resists any formal or rigid experience. People move between the terrace, the gallery, and the stage at their own pace, mixing a drink with a look at an exhibition or a live set.
The space is on the fourth floor, so look for the building entrance on Rua de Passos Manuel and take the elevator up. Evenings tend to fill up when concerts or openings are on, so arriving a little earlier gives you more room to move around.
The venue maintains active ties with art scenes in Rotterdam, Hanover, and Barcelona, which means exhibitions and performances regularly travel between those cities and Porto. This flow brings in artists who would not otherwise pass through the city.
