Fort du Mont

Fort du Mont is a military fortress situated at 1,130 meters elevation on the western slopes of Roche Pourrie, positioned between the Beaufortain Mountains and Tarentaise Valley. The installation contains bunker structures and defensive works built into the mountainous terrain.

The fortress was constructed between 1877 and 1881 and formed part of France's border defense system during the late 19th century. It was built when the country strengthened its mountain frontier regions militarily.

The fortress displays elements of 19th-century French military design through its bunker system and defensive layout. Visitors can observe how soldiers organized and protected this strategic mountain position.

Access is via a mountain path from Albertville, and the location offers broad views of the surrounding valleys and peaks. Sturdy shoes are recommended because the terrain is steep and rocky.

The former military installation now stores aging wheels of Beaufort cheese, connecting military history with regional dairy traditions. This unexpected second life has given the site new purpose while maintaining the structure.
