Wildpark Osterzgebirge, Wildlife park in Altenberg and Geising, Germany
Wildpark Osterzgebirge is a wildlife park set on natural terrain in Geising, in the Saxon Ore Mountains, with enclosures for native species including deer, lynx, wildcats, raccoons, and various birds. Footpaths wind through forest and meadow, giving the whole site the feel of a walk in the woods rather than a traditional zoo.
The park grew from a small sanctuary at the Hartmannmühle site, set up to protect native animals from the Ore Mountains and show them to the public. Over the following decades it expanded gradually, adding new enclosures and educational features along the way.
Feeding times draw families and school groups who watch keepers work up close with deer, lynx, and wildcats. Signs along the paths explain in plain language how each species lives and what role it plays in the Ore Mountains.
The park is best explored on foot, and a half-day is enough for a relaxed visit without rushing. Sturdy shoes are a good idea since the paths cross uneven natural ground, and carrying water helps on warmer days.
A glass-walled beehive lets visitors look straight into a living bee colony and watch the workers move through the comb. Nearby, a medicinal herb garden grows plants that have been used in Central European folk medicine for generations.
