Wildgehege
The wildlife enclosure in Furth im Wald is a large open-air animal facility built on the site of a former granite quarry. It features wide walking paths through open spaces where visitors can observe deer, goats, sheep, and small donkeys living in semi-natural conditions.
The site was an active granite quarry about 100 years ago, where workers extracted stone for construction purposes. After the quarry closed, natural water bodies formed, and the area was later converted into a wildlife enclosure to showcase local fauna to visitors.
The wildlife enclosure reflects the region's connection to nature and local fauna. Visitors can interact directly with the animals through feeding and close observation, creating a hands-on relationship with creatures that belong to the area.
The site has level to gently rolling paths made of asphalt or gravel that are suitable for strollers and wheelchairs. You can feed the animals using automatic feeders located throughout the area for a small fee per portion.
A distinctive feature is the Steinbruchsee, a former granite pit now filled with clear water and about 20 meters deep. The site also includes an aquarium with a 40,000-liter tank where visitors can observe native fish and aquatic creatures up close.
