Haslla Art World, Theme park and museum in 강동면, South Korea
Haslla Art World is a theme park and museum set on a hillside in 강동면, South Korea, combining an outdoor sculpture park with an indoor contemporary art museum. The site slopes down toward the coast, and from several points along the paths, the sea is visible in the distance.
The site was founded as a project to bring art into the coastal landscape of the Gangneung area. Over the years, new buildings and exhibition areas were added, gradually shaping it into the compound it is today.
Haslla Art World has a dedicated Pinocchio Museum where wooden marionettes and puppets are displayed in a playful setting. Visitors who step on certain floor spots trigger some of the figures to move, turning the visit into an interactive experience.
The site is best explored on foot, as the paths between sculptures go up and down the hillside, so comfortable shoes help. There is a hotel on the grounds for those who want to stay overnight and take in the place at a slower pace.
One of the outdoor sculptures is a large metal tube shaped like a sundial. Stepping inside reveals a staircase going underground, a detail that is easy to miss from the outside.
