Ogrody Hortulus Spectabilis, Theme garden complex in Dobrzyca, Poland
Ogrody Hortulus Spectabilis is a large garden complex in Dobrzyca, in the gmina of Będzino near the Baltic coast of Poland, organized into thematic sections with different plant collections. Paths wind through rock formations, water features and landscaped areas arranged according to various gardening traditions.
The gardens opened in 2014 on land that had previously been used for agriculture, converted into a public garden and leisure space. Since then the site has grown progressively, with new thematic areas added over time.
The gardens bring together different gardening traditions from around the world, including Japanese, English and Mediterranean sections, each with its own look and feel. Walking from one area to the next gives the impression of moving between very different places without leaving the site.
The site covers a wide area, so it helps to wear sturdy shoes and set aside enough time to explore the different sections without rushing. Guided tours can be arranged in advance for groups.
The mild coastal climate around this part of Poland allows plant species to grow here that are rarely found in other Polish gardens, including some from the Mediterranean and East Asia. This means visitors with an interest in plants can spot specimens they would not expect to see this far north.
