Sztolnia Królowa Luiza, Theme park in Zabrze, Poland
Sztolnia Królowa Luiza is an underground leisure complex in Zabrze, housed inside the tunnels of a former coal mine in the Zaborze Polnoc district. The site features walkable galleries, old mining machinery, educational areas for children, and a water route navigable by boat.
The mine was established in 1791 following the discovery of coal in the area, making it one of the earliest mining operations in Upper Silesia. It grew steadily over the following centuries before closing and being converted into a visitor site.
The name of the site comes from Queen Louise of Prussia, who visited the region in the early 19th century and left a strong impression on local memory. Her name was given to the mine as a mark of that visit, and it has stayed ever since.
The tunnels stay cool year-round, so bringing a jacket is a good idea even in summer. The underground paths can be uneven, so sturdy footwear makes the walk more comfortable.
Visitors can take a boat ride through underground tunnels, which is one of the few chances in Europe to travel by water inside a former mine. Those waterways were originally built to drain groundwater from the shafts, not to carry passengers.
