Quinta do Santo da Serra
Quinta do Santo da Serra is a public park in Santo António da Serra featuring gardens, lawns, and various recreational facilities. The space includes walking paths, picnic areas, a mini-golf course, a tennis court, and relaxation zones planted with native species and exotic plants such as azaleas, rhododendrons, and camellias.
The park was founded in the 1880s by the Blandy family and displays English country house style. In 1975, the Madeira regional government purchased the estate and used it as a residence for regional leaders before eventually opening it to the public.
The name Santo António da Serra refers to the parish's patron saint and its elevated terrain. Visitors experience a blend of English garden traditions and local leisure culture, where families gather for outdoor meals and recreational activities among the planted grounds.
The park is easily accessible on foot with clear pathways and open areas for navigation. Visitors should allow time for exploration and wear comfortable shoes, as the terrain covers hilly ground and various garden sections.
The grounds feature a dedicated center focused on the forests of Macaronesia, teaching visitors about forest conservation and the region's land history. This educational area particularly attracts school groups interested in learning more about Madeira's natural environment.
