Dasaswamedh Ghat

Dasaswamedh Ghat

Dasaswamedh Ghat is a temple platform on the Ganges in Varanasi with stone steps leading down to the sacred river. The site fills with visitors and boats throughout the day as priests and pilgrims perform prayers, offer flowers, and burn incense.

This site has a history spanning thousands of years and is associated with an ancient sacrifice tradition described in Hindu legends. Over centuries it became a center for pilgrims who bathed in the sacred river seeking purification and spiritual liberation.

The name Dasaswamedh refers to an ancient sacrifice ritual and is deeply rooted in spiritual tradition. Today its cultural role appears through daily prayers, flower offerings, and the evening Ganga Aarti, where priests rhythmically wave large brass lamps and devotees release floating lamps on the water to carry their prayers downstream.

The site is easily accessible and located in the city center, with narrow lanes leading down to the river. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes, dress modestly, and observe local customs especially during religious ceremonies.

During the evening Ganga Aarti multiple large brass lamps are swung simultaneously by priests, creating a rare spectacle of synchronized light dancing on the water. This choreography has been passed down through generations without written instruction and is one of few ceremonies of this scale performed daily.
