Sinduri Sand Dune, Coastal dune in Taean-gun, South Korea
Sinduri Sand Dune is a coastal dune located in Taean-gun, on the west coast of South Korea, and is considered one of the largest dune fields in the country. The terrain is made up of wind-shaped sand ridges that shift gradually over time due to sea breezes blowing inland.
The dunes formed thousands of years ago as wind picked up sand from the exposed tidal flats and carried it inland. They were later designated as a protected natural monument by the South Korean government to prevent further alteration.
The dunes are recognized in Korea as a rare example of a coastal sand dune system, which makes them a popular destination for school trips and family outings. Visitors often walk the marked paths and watch the wind shift the sand surface from one visit to the next.
Visitors can walk through the dune area on marked paths, and sturdy footwear is a good idea since the sand can be soft and uneven underfoot. Conditions vary with the season, and windy days make the walk more demanding, so checking the weather beforehand helps.
Although the dunes look dry from a distance, pockets of moisture trapped beneath the sand support rare plant species that are found almost nowhere else in Korea. These wet zones are not visible from the paths, which makes them easy to miss entirely.
